Watering
Water newly planted camellias regularly, and water them during the summer when they produce flowers. Check the soil about 4 inches down with a trowel to see if it's dry. Avoid prolonged watering with tap water if you have hard water.
Feeding
Feed camellias in early spring with an ericaceous fertilizer. Don't feed them after the end of July, as this can cause bud drop.
Sunlight
Camellias prefer morning sun and dappled shade in the afternoon. As they mature, they can tolerate more sun.
Soil
Camellias grow best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH of 5.5 to 6.5). They dislike lime.
Planting
Space camellias at least five feet apart so they don't compete for water and nutrients. Plant them at the same depth they were in their nursery container.
Pruning
Prune camellias to remove dead branches.
Pests and insects
Camellias can be susceptible to pests and insects, especially if they're neglected or in poor health.
Overwintering
Camellia sasanqua grown in containers may need winter protection in most parts of the UK. Camellia japonica and Camellia ? willamsii cultivars may also need protection in Scotland or northern England.
You can also grow camellias in pots. Use a pot that's at least 30 cm wide, with plenty of holes in the base and crocks to improve drainage.
